Just as Gary Hartzell reminded us to publish articles
in our administrator's professional journals,
http://slj.reviewsnews.com/index.asp?layout=articleArchive&articleid=CA152978&publication=slj

we must also remember to expand our horizons by making presentations
relating to libraries and librarians to those outside of our profession and
in places where we wouldn't normally be found. This includes attending
conferences that focus on our administrators (i.e., ASCD).

Otherwise, we are often "preaching to the choir" when it comes to conference
presentations that are directed only to those within our profession.

I suggest we continue to work our way into not only our teachers'
conferences but also our administrators' conferences--- and sometimes the
best way to share the experience is to invite your administrator to your
local, state, or national library conventions--- this allows the
administrator to see your work as it is presented by others within the field
and it can give you the opportunity to ask to attend an administrator's
conference (or, if you've prepared a unique presentation for ALA-- offer to
present it to the administrators conference when your administrator
attends). It may offer them the opportunity to "shine among their peers"
when you represent your school with solutions to an issue that addresses
administrative concerns. (It can also serve as a continual reminder that
librarians are not only teachers, but also library administrators--- a job
description not necessarily considered by most principals.)
