(As a "displaced Okie" who could not finish the last two chapters of _Where
the Red Fern Grows_ for three days because I was crying so much.....) I was
confused about Old Blue....then I did the research again....Old Blue was the
dog that Old Dan got into a fight with...Little Ann was the other redbone
coonhound pup that Billy owned. (When the movie came out in the '70's, I
had the great opportunity to visit the production sites in Tahlequah and
Vian--- I lived about 30 minutes away-- and the country portrayed was
authentic....beautiful!) This was where I grew up and I could identify with
the story and with Wilson Rawl's portrayal of life --- because there were
still many families that lived pretty much the same way that Rawl's
described years earlier.

Also, I wanted to share a great website that I found on dog stories that
some of you might want to use with your students. The website is primarily
about dogs but it includes some cute projects. The books that are covered
include: Where the Red Fern Grows, Old Yeller, Because of Winn Dixie and
more!
