Hello All,
I am a Minnesota, USA classroom teacher currently teaching overseas. I
am trying to pursue certification to be a school librarian. Thanks for
your help thus far. You have been a wealth of knowledge regarding
specific programs, ALA certified programs, and foreign MLIS degrees.
As I continue to look into different options, it appears that for
reasons of cost, time and ease of access, getting an online degree from
Australia may be more feasible than getting an online degree from the
US.
My new questions for you center on the differences in degrees.
Although the course work appears to be almost identical between the
programs, the name of the degree is different. In the US I'd be
getting a Masters of Education in Library Science. In Australia the
degree would be a Masters of Education in Teacher Librarianship.
And so, I ask those of you in the US (esp. those of you with a Teacher
Librarianship degree who are currently working in the US)...
- State board licensing considerations aside, if I earned the MTL,
would I be at a disadvantage when job hunting in the US against other
candidates with MLIS degrees?
- Practically speaking, are school library systems different enough
between the US and Australia that I'd be at a practical disadvantage if
I received my training from Australia and then went to work in the US?
