For those that requested a posting of the results, it turns out that the
books per student number varies from state to state. Here in Florida, the
guideline most schools use is the one set by the Southern Association of Colleges
and
Schools (www.sacs.org). They recommend at least 10 books per student or 2,000
books, whichever is greater.

Here is info sent to me on other states:

Minnesota
The Minnesota Educational Media Organization came up with standards for
school library media programs in 2000.
They are available at http://www.memoweb.org/htmlfiles/links.html#standards
You can download the standards as a PDF file.
Standard 14 is "Do the collections and resources support the school
curriculum?" It provides a description of a minimum, standard and
exemplary situation.

Pennsylvania
Check out the Pennsylvania Guidelines for School Library Information
Programs. A pdf document is available online (about 65 pgs). It was invaluable to me
when I had to answer the same question. It covers everything a media center
should have-including periodicals, equipment, printers, computers, etc.

Missouri

www.dese.state.mo.us/divimprove/curriculum/lmcindex.htm

In the state of Missouri they have figured out a formula based on
the enrollment. Also in the non-fiction area there are 10 sections
(320,330,360,370,380,520,550,560,570,610,620) that the books can not be over
11 years old.

Connecticut
In the state of CT where I have worked as a media specialist, the state
guidelines suggest 25 titles per student.

Texas
In Texas we use the numbers as follows: below 10/student= unacceptable;
10/student=acceptable, 15=above 20=exemplary.

Thanks for the responses!
