First, I would like to say thanks to all that responded with opinions on students checking out their own materials. A few of you said that it would free the librarian to work with students, teachers, etc., and that high school students can be trusted to check out their own books. Most of you had the following concerns: students taking books without checking out, checking out under other people's names, playing with the system to erase fines/blocks. These are some of the same concerns I have. I am also afraid that the students will quickly break the equipment by playing with it. Many of you suggested letting trusted student library assistants checkout materials. While this is a great idea at the elementary and middle school, Oklahoma statutes prohibit any but library employees from checking out material at the High School level. Again, thanks for your help.
