NCLB Summer Reading Pilot - comments?

I am currently finishing up an article about the DOE's pilot
summer reading program being tested in Atlanta this summer.

I would love some comments from  media specialists for possible
inclusion in my article regarding the reliance of this program on a
simple reading log

opposed to a program like Scholastic's Reading Counts that
uses quizzes to verify quality reading.

Some of you may have seen the AP story about the DOE
reading list being withdrawn because of errors.

what strategies would you recommend if you were building a model
program for the nation?  What do you think of the DOE's reading log?
