The 'tinyurl' is a form of the persistent url (PURL) idea developed by OCLC. It doesn't have any of the original url in it, and there's no way to trace it backwards. It really creates a link from the long url that you input into the system to the smaller url that is created. If the longer url goes away, the tinyurl won't work either. There is no intelligence connecting the two of them. I wouldn't use it in webpages, since you have no control over it. For more information, on the particular item, go to <http://www.tinyurl.com>. If you want more information on PURLs, a search of the OCLC site should turn up something. (I'm not trying from home on a slow dialup connection).
