Charles Sturt University in Australia has held extremely successful online conferences where international presenters and participants could contribute via their computer, sitting in their pyjamas drinking coffee, if they wanted to. Papers were posted online and then participants could sign on for a live workshop to chat with the presenter. There were social events too and it was all done in a MOO environment set up to represent a conference centre. Each strand also had an email list where participants and presenters could discuss issues asynchronously. The major issue was of course the world time zones (as it often is) and I have no idea of the technical requirements behind it all. Even if there wasn't a full-blown online conference, perhaps there could be one-off discussion sessions where we can work through some of the issues like Educating Principals in a live session.
