GEN: Kansas City School District to Cut 24 Librarians

In light of the AASL Conference in KC this October, I thought everyone
might like to read this dismaying article that appeared in today's
Kansas City Star:

"The Kansas City school board approved a $331.5 million budget Wednesday
that closes Meservey Elementary School and could cost some librarians
and teachers their jobs.

The budget for the upcoming school year is almost $16 million less than
the current one and has a $16.1 million deficit, which will be covered
by money from the district's reserve funds. The vote was 6-2.

The board agreed to cut 75 teaching positions and three vice principal
jobs because of declining enrollment. The board also supported a
last-minute recommendation to eliminate 24 librarians."
