"Library/Oprah Ties to Continue
The American Library Association plans to continue providing its member
libraries with books recommended by daytime talk-show host Oprah Winfrey,
who indicated April 5 she would no longer be featuring Oprah’s Book Club
titles on a regular basis. Her highly publicized selections have helped make
bestsellers out of little-known authors.
Gerald Hodges, associate executive director for communications and
marketing, said ALA has had a relationship with the book club since its
inception in 1996. The publishers send approximately 10,000 copies of each
Oprah-selected book to some 3,560 public, high-school, chapter, and
state-library ALA members. Each library receives up to five copies,
depending on its size.
Hodges added that the Association is also contacting the Today Show to begin
a similar relationship with its newly announced book club expected to debut
