I did just that but for 6th grade. My reasoning was that, in Texas, we have
a reading list called the Lone Star Books, which are for grades 6-8. Our
Bluebonnet list is for gr. 3-6. I ordered the Lone Star books each year and
added other fiction recommended by the JH librarians as excellent and
suitable for 6th. The collection only occupied one bookcase and I was very
careful what I put there. I wrote a letter to parents explaining the purpose
of the shelf. I never got any flack. The younger kids were somewhat curious
but considered that it gave them "something to wait for." The shelf was near
enough to the regular fiction section but slightly removed and clearly
labelel "Sixth Grade Checkout only".

Whatever works for you.
