I did just that but for 6th grade. My reasoning was that, in Texas, we have a reading list called the Lone Star Books, which are for grades 6-8. Our Bluebonnet list is for gr. 3-6. I ordered the Lone Star books each year and added other fiction recommended by the JH librarians as excellent and suitable for 6th. The collection only occupied one bookcase and I was very careful what I put there. I wrote a letter to parents explaining the purpose of the shelf. I never got any flack. The younger kids were somewhat curious but considered that it gave them "something to wait for." The shelf was near enough to the regular fiction section but slightly removed and clearly labelel "Sixth Grade Checkout only". Whatever works for you. Jan Moore Librarian, Hillsboro HS Hillsboro, TX PS I received oodles of requests for the PPT about teen readers. I'll be sending those out as soon as I can. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
