Because so many grants and community programs are based on f&r lunch counts
we need to make sure these numbers are accurate. One of the most logical
situations I have ever heard concerning f&r lunches came about several years
ago. A friend of my was upset because her school did not perform well on a
state measurement. One of the factors in the measurement was the number of
students who qualify for free and reduced lunches. (One of those situations
where the more qualifying students you had, the impact on your final score
would be higher.) Because she worked at a high school several students who
qualified did not apply. If they don't apply, they aren't counted as
qualifying. Solution? The following year the principal had EVERY parent fill
out the paper work, but did not require students to take the free lunches
even if they did qualify. In other words, it doesn't matter how many students
take the free or reduced lunches, only how many qualify. Results: the
school's score jumped dramatically.
