I am interested in knowing if the novel Rule of the Bone by Russell Banks has been approved as classroom reading in any of your schools. One of our English teachers has submitted it for Board of Education approval for use in a 12th grade class next year. Our superintendent (a very open-minded individual) is reviewing it and has come across several passages that are disturbing for their sexual nature and explicit vocabulary. I haven't read the book, but am wondering if it contains a message so redeeming and worthwhile that these passages can be mitigated. Can anyone vouch for this book? TIA. Marie A.
