The American Memory collections at http://memory.loc.gov/ are
excellent. Photographs and many other print formats are digitized and
organized there.

Smithsonian Institute (http://www.si.edu/) is an excellent resource.

For a project that required pictures of technology I made a short
webpage of links to several resources (sorry, it was a paid thing so it
is not available). I found there are extensive archives of pictures
online at many state and local museum and government sites and . A
advanced google search (http://www.google.com/advanced_search) for the
event with a limiter of .gov, .edu, or .org will usually bring up
several resources. Many companies have archives also. Then make a quick
page of links by timeline or category. An advantage to this is a
teachable moment in searching sites, or skimming for keywords, etc.

Many of our National Parks were established at historical sites. They
(http://www.nps.gov) have links to historical events at
http://www.cr.nps.gov/

Subject: Request: resources for significant historical photos

Our high school publications teacher is looking for photography
resources that she could pass on to her students if she gave an
assignment to find a significant photo in our nation's history. The
suggestions I gave her were the AP Photo archive which we subscribe to
through AccuNet and the National Archives at www.nara.gov. Does anyone
else have any other suggestions?

Thanks,
