This is a very real disorder, which my son (now 28)still suffers from - for
him black on white letters move over the page like waves; for others they
are like music score lines. The problem is that these kids don't know that
this is NOT how it is supposed to be, and often the issue is only identified
because someone who knows thinks to ask them about what they see when they
look at a page of print. Shane has always had spelling problems because the
letters jump around so he doesn't have a visual memory of their correct
order, and his writing is that of a demented ant! It really ahs had a big
impact on his life.
A common indicator is car sickness especially if you are driving through
trees where you are in and out of shadow - it appears like flashing lights
to these kids. Others need a different colour for each lens. Flourescent
lights are also bad news. Shane needed a blue overlay (we actually got him
glasses with blue-tinted lenses) while his friend needed yellow. This was a
particularly hot topic in the early 1980s - I don't know if it is the same
now, but I have certainly seen some great results.
