Here's a conundrum for you. One of our 10th grade English benchmarks
involves researching famous assassinations and presenting the findings
in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. The teacher would like the
presentation to include a final Works Cited slide and corresponding
parenthetical documentation in the slides themselves. Here's the
problem. Many of the slides will contain illustrations, photographs,
etc. which students will no doubt find through a Google Image Search.
The MLA Handbook (referring to a typed research paper, mind you) states
that such illustrative material should be cited by stating the artist's
name, title of work, Institution that houses the work, etc., etc. and so
on. Some of the best illustrations I've found as examples are on
"flakey" websites that I would not recommend as a credible information
source and they often give no information about the illustration itself.
Should students use these illustrations or not? And if they do,should
their sources be documented and if so, how? Would you think it
sufficient just to list the URL of the website under the illustration?
Should we not require them to credit illustrations at all? How do you
handle this in your schools? We hope to begin this assignment on
Tuesday, March 11, so I'm waiting eagerly for some direction! TIA.
