While it has always been policy, and there has always been at least one or
two who were game, I have finally gotten a significant number of Kinder,
First, and Second grade teachers to send kids to the library other than
their weekly scheduled time. I have kids that come twice a day some days
checking out tons of "I Can Read" and "Rookie Reader" nonfiction books.
Talk about "independent users!" They come in with their little cards and
timers pinned to their shirts, get their books, look at mags, check on the
animals (snakes, lizards, turtles, gerbils), even sit at a computer maybe,
and leave - all on their own. Other times if I am free they love to
interact with an adult who is not there to give them grief (sorry, too
often that's my characterization of how grownups are to kids - a coach, a
teacher, etc.). Giving an additional glow to this scene of the little ones
is when you look at this huge room and also see 5th graders, and all in
between, essentially doing the same thing.
