Tech: .JPG+.sit

I have pictures that I have saved in iPhoto using Mac OS X.  When saved, they
have a .JPG extension.  When I export them to the desktop to save them in
order to attach them to an e-mail, they still register with the.JPG
extension.  However, when I mail them as an attachment, the additional
extension +.sit is added.  The pictures are then unable to be opened.

Any ideas?
