I have had overwhelming requests for inof on book repair, and thought it
might be useful for others out there.
Just a brief overview on some important info in response to the on book
repair. Never use any type of glue in a book except a PVA glue.
Polyvinyl acetate glue is flexible, and the only glue that will allow a
'good' bond. Others will damage the books. That includes Elmers, rubber
cement, school glue, glue sticks, hot glue etc. If you need to use tape
to mend inside the book, only use a thin, non-acidic tape, such as
Easy-Bind, document repair tape. Scotch tape, electrical tape, ductape,
strapping tape etc. should never be used in books or to attach book
covers. Having the right materials will make you job easier. Demco,
Gaylord, and other sources have these materials in their catalogs.
Always try to purchase acid-free, ph neutral materials. ::: To tip in a
page that has been torn out, ; in the book spine, remove any scraps of
the page that may be there ; if the removed page is uneven, use a paper
cutter to even the edge to be tipped into the spine. Dip a stick [brush
handles work] into the glue, and roll it along the edge to be tipped in.
Place a strip of wax paper behind the tipped in page, and in front of
the tipped in page. Check to see that the page is even at the top &
bottom, and firmly into the spine. Gently close the book with the wax
paper on either side of the page [to prevent glue migration] Place the
text flat, weigh it down with a brick or several heavy books, and let
dry overnight. Once dry, remove wax papers. You're done! There are books
available that detail repair techniques, and I have written a manual
that is used in Kansas systems. I may have a video available by June. If
you are interested in it, let me know. Remember--keep scotch tape OUT of
the books. Cheri Nienke
