Anne -- I don't know about you, but I don't have an aide. I wanted the kids to be as self-sufficient as possible when they check out books. So I used the barcode-on-the-shelf-marker concept. I got 400 free paint stirrers from Home Depot and made a shelf marker for each child by printing labels with their name (first name BIG, last name small), teacher and grade. Under that I stuck a bar code. The shelf markers are stored in plastic pitchers behind the desk, marked with their teacher's name. When the class comes in, I have shelf markers laid out on the desk. Each child takes theirs. They scan their own bar codes and their own books. I start this at 1st grade (kindies still use cards in plastic binders). I have very few problems. Rules are: no one touches your shelf marker but you. Any hitting of anything (another child, a desk, yourself) with a shelf marker results in having the shelf marker taken away - which means no book check-out. This curbs 99% of shelf-marker-as-sword play. Hey, and some of them even use them as shelf markers! =) -<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>- Maggi Rohde, Library/Media Specialist Allen Elementary School, Ann Arbor, MI maggi@intranet.org -<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>-<>- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=- All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
