Hi, I have seen references to poetry readings and poetry "slams" held in high school libraries. Has anyone who held a "slam" had a problem with the terminology leading to inappropriate poetry, i.e. profane or a putdown of previous participants in the "slam?" At our English Dept. meeting today we discussed the possibility of holding such an event in the library for April is Poetry Month, but some raised caution on the use of the term "slam," which may not have the best connotation. My feeling is that if we lay out the ground rules in advance, the kids will stick to them and the term "slam" will make the event more appealing to a broader array of students.Comments?
