Hi, folks -

After 28 years as an elementary librarian, this is my first year in our =
district's middle school. I would be interested in knowing who does the =
teaching of the bibliography cards and the note cards, etc. In our =
school, the 7th grade reading teachers introduce the format and use the =
fifty states as the subject. They require four specific sources. In =
8th grade, the language arts teachers require a paper on specific =
animals using a minimum of 7 various sources. None of these skills are =
taught in 6th grade. I made the suggestion at a recent meeting that =
research should begin in 6th grade. I said that I would teach the =
needed skills and that the social studies teachers would be more than =
willing to work with me. One teacher is still stuck in the World =
Book...Little did I know that I was opening a big can of worms. The 7th =
grade reading teachers feel that the 7th grade LA teachers should do it. =
The 6th grade LA teacher got "huffy" thinking that it would be more =
work for her when she wouldn't even be involved! The 8th grade LA =
teacher has been using the animal subject for 35 years and doesn't want =
the elementary teachers to do animal research anymore. Please help!! I =
feel like I'm stuck in a time warp here. I'd appreciate any ideas on new =
topics for 7th and 8th grade research that wouldn't step on anyone's =
toes (other curriculum areas) to introduce the ideas of research. With =
new topics in mind, I'd be able to order books for next year. As =
mentioned above, would you also let me know who teaches what...By the =
way, biographies have been done to death!

Thanks so much,
Mary Ditoro, Librarian
