Next year I am converting from very old (DOS) Follett software to a
statewide network (INFOhio - all you Buckeyes will know why I'm happy
about that!). My current software uses three digit patron numbers that I
have to hand type when checking out; my new system will allow me to have
patron barcodes that I can scan.

I have visited other school libraries that use this system; some keep a
notebook with one page /class on which the barcodes are next to each
student name. Others have a library card system, with each student's
name and barcode on a card that the students must retrieve and bring to
the desk at checkout time. I see the advantage of the card system in
that it "trains" children for what they will do at the public library,
but I think the notebook system would be easier on me. In addition, I am
in a K-2 school. Perhaps the cards would too difficult for children that
age (?)

Could those of you who already have either of these systems in place
with primary children share what you think are the pros and cons of what
you use? I will gladly post a hit.
