Years of experience as a school librarian alone will not enable you able to
know a book by just a brief description. BUT...years of reading, reading,
reading the books which are in your own collection will!

My students think I have read every book in our library - and I HAVE read
many of them! I revisit the classics, award winners, etc. that I read
myself as a child, and I attempt to read every chapter book which I receive.
Does it take time? YES! But, I would be reading something no matter what,
so it might as well be things from my own library!

My summer project this summer? I ordered and received this year all of the
Newbery honor books all the way back to the beginning - at least the ones
still in print. They are all going home with me this summer for my summer
leisure reading, as well as a few other golden-oldies that I keep seeing on
the shelves and don't know anything about (in particular a couple of novels
by Julie Andrews!) Often, if a book is not circulating and I haven't read
it - it goes home with me. That way I can make an informed decision- Is it
not worth keeping? Or is it worth keeping and booktalking/promoting?

13 years experience as a children's librarian, and still reading children's
lit after all these years....
