I guess my first question would be: Why in the world do they only get 3
seconds to choose a book? If someone turned me loose in the public library
and only gave me a couple of minutes, I'd run and grab too!

Isn't there any way the library time can be expanded to allow more browsing
time, more time to just "enjoy" being in the library and handling the books?

Besides, where would you put the book about a firehouse dog - with the
firetruck books, or the dog books? How about a book about dogs AND cats?
How many possible subject headings/topics do you think you would end up with
the the picture book section? There are probably hundreds!

I sincerely think you should continue to shelve the books by author, and
find a way to allow more time, and more "readers' advisory" time for the
student. Just my opinion...

(also lib. tech. student) Dear LM NET, What is your opinion on shelving Easy
and Picture books by topic instead of by author? The kids at my school get
about 3 seconds to choose a book - they run and grab. Author's names, except
for Seuss and Berenstain, don't mean much to them. If the books were
arranged by topic (kittens, trucks, baby brothers, etc.) wouldn't it be
easier for a child to find something that interests him? Thanks - Carole
