I would think most schools deal with this problem, including the private Upper School where I work. We do not charge teachers for lost books--and, fortunately, there are not that many who don't return them (only three or four who have run up large bills). We send out notices twice a year (at the end of each semester), and follow up with personal contact. It's a shame that this is necessary at all--but most particularly in the case of a school in a financially-depressed area. Mary Peterson, M.L.I.S.
