Shelving books by topic / subject would make it much like some
bookstores...and we've gone around that issue a few times already. If we
stay consistent with what is already being used in thousands of
libraries--both school and public libraries-- across the nation, then we're
guaranteed that our students will be able to find the information when they
need it.

Teaching students how to use the online card catalog, how to locate the
shelves that contain their favorite authors / books, and perhaps using some
"markers"-- toys, signs, small pictures in acrylic photo stands--near those
specific "favorite" books will help younger students to identify the areas
that have their favorite books / authors.

Once the children are old enough to locate information by call number (Dewey
or author's last name letters), then practice is the key. Allowing more
"browsing time" and more library time locating materials will only make what
has worked for decades (Dewey) work for everyone.

Although it sounds like a great idea...try locating a specific, older title
in B. Dalton's or Barnes and Noble--without the help of an assistant or
their "inventory catalog"-- just by browsing the subject areas. I can
guarantee that some materials won't be found easily...too bad there isn't a
card catalog there! (Yes, there are online catalogs of inventory...but have
you seen how they're arranged? By subject....and you can't find them, but
neither can the assistants!)

Let's not "dumb down" the library, too!

(also lib. tech. student) Dear LM NET, What is your opinion on shelving Easy
and Picture books by topic instead of by author? The kids at my school get
about 3 seconds to choose a book - they run and grab. Author's names, except
for Seuss and Berenstain, don't mean much to them. If the books were
arranged by topic (kittens, trucks, baby brothers, etc.) wouldn't it be
easier for a child to find something that interests him? Thanks - Carole
