Christine,

Our school has one class per grade and no media center in the building.
First our county library is excellent and it has a branch two blocks down
the road from the school so that the students could walk to it. The
librarians there are helpful and will order special books from the main
branch or branches if the class is doing a research project. She tries to
make the times our visits interesting.
The down side of using the public library is the students are not taught
the library skills they will need when they get into the older grades. At
times when the Liberian is reading a story the class is interpreted because
someone from the public will come in to look for a book or start talking to
someone at the fount desk. Also, one of the responsibilities of a media
center is to alien itself with the school's curriculum where public school
library does not. In a school media center the media specialist could extend
the classroom settings.
I am not sure if the public library could handle X amount of classes each
week.
        I hope this helps.

Subject: GREET: Looking for opinions about eliminating school libraries
for public libraries.

Hi,My name is Christine Powers and I'm new to the list. I am a graduate
student working towards my M.Ed as a media specialist. The state where I go
to school is making radical changes to their education system. One of the
ideas presented is eliminating school libraries and creating a new system
with the public libraries. I am looking for opinions about whether this
works or not. Has anyone tried this? Has it succeeded or failed? As school
librarians how do feel about the idea of public libraries taking over your
role? I would greatly appreciate any response for or against this idea and
especially if you have been in a situation where this has occurred. Thank
you, Christine PowersLibrary Assistant/Phillips Exeter
