We shelve by first letter of author's name, also. However, we use colored
dots to mark the spines, not letters. I ordered all the available colors
from Demco, and have three designations. Large colored dot, small colored
dot, and bull's eye, small dot on center of large dot. For instance, all
the A's have a large red dot, B's yellow, C's small pink dot, L's small
yellow dot on large blue dot. I figured out what sections were the biggest
before I started and used the large dots on them. The sections that were
the smallest got the bull's eyes. This was to save dots and time. The kids
can also put the books back themselves by matching colors. This is
especially helpful in the fall when a lot of the little ones don't know
their letters too well. Dots are also a lot easier to see on the skinny
spines of most picture books.
