Oddly enough, this one started out as an inspiring item in a journal,
and has sunk to chain letter status. The full story is at  . However, it's been around
since 1991, and has been on the Internet since 1998.

Since some filters block Snopes, here are the relevant sources for the

"All the Good Things" first appeared in Proteus, A Journal of Ideas in
1991; and from there went to Reader's Digest, on whose pages it appeared
the same year (1991). The piece was reprinted in the original Chicken
Soup for the Soul book (1993), and offered yet again in Stories for the
Heart (1996).

The version in Snopes is a bit different from the version that Harry
posted.  I was going to heartily agree with Lisa, but figured I'd better
check my facts first.
