This 100 best books has got me thinking - I recall hearing that a child
should have been read to for x number of hours before entering

Each year I assist in the preparation of a "readiness test" to be
distributed at kindergarten orientation in late May. (i.e. can your
child recognize his/her name in print, ID colors, shapes, use the
bathroom without help, share with others, etc). I usually include a
list of 8-10 books that children should be familiar with before
entering kindergarten - i.e. Cat in the Hat, Mother Goose Stories, etc.
this year I'd like to come up with an organized list of 50 or so books,
(and have a separate handout this year) that every incoming
kindergartner should have had read to them or be familiar with. Books
should be widely available, so that parents do not spend the summer
tracking down titles all over the county. Any thoughts? I'd be happy to
post a hit, and send contributors a copy of my final document when its
finished. This year's orientation is June 4, but I'd like to have
everything finished before May 25. Thanks!
