Here is my theory based on similar experiences at our school. Similar
errors with student disks, not recognized - do you want to format etc...
My theory is that the disks were formatted in MS DOS. Windows 2000 and
XP need FAT 32. Different file systems - Win 2000 and XP do not like the
older format. So make sure all disks are formatted on 2000 or XP
machines so they are backwards compatible to Win 98.

Subject: TECH: Floppy disks

For the last two months we have had a problem in our computer lab that =
=3D
our instructional technology technicians have been unable to solve. =3D
Frequently, students saving work to 3 =3DBD floppy disks receive no =
error
=3D
message on saving, but are unable to open anything on the disk later. =
=3D
Even disks that are brought in from home, files opened and then resaved
=3D
will randomly bring up the message =3D93a drive inaccessible=3D94 and =
the =3D
disk is no longer recognized on any of our school=3D92s computers.

=3D20

We are running Windows2000 on IBM machines with Panda antivirus updated
=3D
from our network at each login. Other antivirus programs have been run
=3D
on a few machines with no viruses detected. One computer=3D92s hard =
drive
=3D
was reformatted and the floppy a drive replaced. Yet with all these =3D
measures, we still have the problem. It does not happen every time or =
=3D
on a particular machine. We can no longer, in conscience, allow =3D
students to open their disks on the lab computers because they risk =3D
losing all their work.

=3D20

Does anyone have any suggestions for something we are overlooking? The
=3D
tech people are considering that the problem may be environmental. Any
=3D
assistance would be greatly appreciated.=3D20
