Many teachers require several different types of resources be used in
research paper assignments including magazines. Our students use the
Readers Guide to Periodicals on a regular basis as well as books and
websites. We don't check out many magazines but we circulate them
anyway. We keep 5 years worth of about 45 different subscriptions.

Just thought I would share.

Our periodical collection is larger, and more popular, than it ever
has
been!

As our need for magazines for research diminished with the development
of Internet-based database subscriptions, we totally changed our
focus.

Our periodicals now include such magazines as Teen People, NBA Inside
Stuff, Daily Bread Inline Skate, Game Now, Seventeen, In Style and BMX
plus. The only 2 news magazines we subscribe to are Time and Newsweek.
We check out both back and current issues on an overnight basis during
lunch. Our periodicals are now our biggest circulation after paperback
fiction.

We got rid of the lemons and made lemonade!

How many of you are keeping magazines? I am looking at circ stats
for the past few years and I am concerned about the lack of interest
in magazines which appears to be a trend. What is the magic number
of checkouts per year based on number of subscriptions or student
body? I am not sure how to make a decision on this matter. What do
you think?
