I cancelled our school's subscription. I was a brand new media specialist
in a brand new media center, and I had just arranged all the magazines
just so for a tour by all the district brass WHEN... I happened to look at
them from across the room and saw that Alfred E. Neuman was flipping the
bird with a big foam finger. I hadn't looked at the magazine since
childhood, and when I looked through it I came to the conclusion that it
was not appropriate for middle school. I'm not uptight at all, but some
of the drawings were such that if kids pulled up stuff like that on the
Internet they'd be in trouble. I'm not in favor of censorship at all, but
felt it was a responsible selection decision to discontinue the
subscription. It had been ordered by the previous media specialist who
may not have even been familiar with its content. I ordered Sports
Illustrated for Kids instead and they enjoy it a great deal.

Our students' favorites include Popular Hot Rodding, Skateboarder and Teen
People.
