I have to jump in here. What about the fact the Brer Rabbit stories are American Folk Tales? They do have some merit, just in their history. Part of my curriculum for 2nd grade is to teach Folk Tales and the kids LOVE stories about Brer Rabbit. They can't wait to find out how he is going to outsmart his opponents. I read them the Julius Lester/Jerry Pinkney version, which are fantastic, but I am not sure that I see a difference between the Lester/Pinkney vernacular and the Song of the South vernacular. I do not mean to be naive, I just don't understand. Kristin Kristin M. Dardano Library Media Specialist E.R. I certainly would not suggest that the = Uncle Remus stories are "integral" to our culture, but they are a part of = it. If you want to teach the stories, use the Julius Lester/Jerry Pinkney = creations. If you must have a video presentation, Rabbit Ears has an = excellent version of Brer Rabbit and Boss Lion, with Danny glover as the = narrator. Other than Steamboat Willy, i would not consider the Disney = catalog to be integral to our culture. =20 BTW, is teaching about stereotypes part of the 1st grade curriculum? I = doubt that was the original intent for showing the film and therefore = becomes an excuse rather than a purpose. And what will the children walk = away remembering? The stereotypes, not the teacher talk. SOTS might be = appropriate for a high school class when viewing selected segments as part = of an analysis of the times and context, possibly comparing it to racist = images in literature. Finally, if you have to plan to "minimize any negative repercussions," is = the activity something you should be doing in the first place? WOOOHOOOO!!!!!!!!!! =20 >>> L Stahl <readingranch@YAHOO.COM> - 5/9/3 8:39 AM >>> As a person who enjoys a really good story, I hate to see children be = denied watching these stories because they are integral to our culture - = IF they are presented in the right way. And as far as presenting stereotype= s goes, I would have to remind myself that I wouldn't want to facilitate = the children accepting these stereotypes as true. Playing the devil's = advocate, though, what about what the children watch on TV? What about = what WE watch on TV? Do we not see numerous sterotypes there? I think = that what I would do with the teacher is maybe some sort of collaboration = in which you talk about the people and animals in the movie and if those = stereotypes (or kinds of people - for Kinders) still exist. I think this = could be a really big learning environment for all. Just my two cents, = though. And I know that I would seriously talk to any teacher to see if I = could help her teach a lesson that would minimize any negative repurcussion= s. I think that our past is important because there is so much that we can = learn from it. If we learn from it, then we can further human relations.
