Excuse an Aussie for interfering but I did not even realise that the Brer Rabbit stories were racist or stereotypical or any of the things that have been discussed. I have deliberately tried to have them on my library shelves (have only been able to get Enid Blyton retells) as I remember listening to them and loving them on the children's radio shows as a very little kid in the early 50s in New Zealand. It never occurred to me then or now that the characters are any more than what they appeared to be, and I doubt that my students would either. However, I am sensitive to the feelings of others and would not like to continue offering something that is generally considered offensive - so do I keep them or cull them?
