We don't have problems with attaching posters to the wall but the main
problem that I am facing is with overcrowding. The library is very small
and each morning we have around ninety to one hundred 4th and 5th graders
who must go in there for supervision between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. until it is
time for school to start. There is a teacher on duty so I am not directly
responsible for the students.

Several years ago after a tornado warning during a reception in which the
library was extremely overcrowded, we had the fire marshall come in. The
fire marshall gave us a limit of 75 which is still crowded but can be
managed. I have spoken to the school administration about this repeatedly
without success. The association has requested that the fire marshall
re-evaluate the situation but the administration has not followed up on it.
Each morning before school we have students at the tables and on the floor.
Many of these students have class projects and some are large. It is
impossible to keep them quiet. When they leave, the library usually looks
like a storm has come through - fortunately we do have students who are
willing to put materials away, push in chairs, etc. However, because of
this decision by the administration, the library cannot be used before
school for research because of space.

I was told by our association that I am not responsible for a decision made
by the administration in the event that something happens due to
overcrowding but in this day of sue-happy parents, it worries me. This is
one of the reasons that I made the decision to retire.
