Seems like one of the simplest methods of at least reducing plagiarism (at
least for book reports) is to require students:

For more advanced students:

(a) Compare two books (the required one, plus one of their choice)
(b) Compare the characters in each book, saying how they are similar and how
they are different
(c) Compare the plot from each book, (similarities and differences again).

Require that specific page numbers be quoted with examples.

For less advanced students:

Ask them to compare the charactors and plots from the required book with
stories from TODAY'S newspaper ...

Let them try to copy THAT off the net :-)

Hope this helps?

>Subject: Gen: How to write a "book report" that cannot be plagairized
>Date: Mon, 12 May 2003 12:10:00 -0500

>Our Japanese teacher assigned her advanced students to read a contemporary
>fiction novel (in English) by a Japanese author. We have a small but nice
>collection in our library. Each student was to choose a different novel.
>Today, the teacher asked me to read the reports because English is not her
>first language and it is a bit of a struggle for her to read, comprehend
>and assess English usage. She wanted a second opinion. There are only
>four papers. I don't mind helping, although I've never graded a "book
>report" or paper before. However, I do know high school students. Two of
>the papers came straight from Amazon.com, one paraphrased and the other a
>straight cut and paste. ARGH!!!
>
>Now, aside from the whole messy academic dishonesty problem that clearly
>needs to be addressed, how could one create an assignment that would
>demonstrate a) having actually read the work in question and b) show
>thoughtful and reflective thinking about the work?
