Well, definitely not a message we WANT to send, in this case!  On the other
hand, sometimes we just have to take it.  We don't want to send a message
that a library is punitive, either.  And of course, the principal just is
thinking "pick your fights," and is seeing it as ONE book, and ONE parent.  I
had a child bring me back the EMPTY covers of a book, dripping wet (it was in
her BACKPACK) and the parent refuses to pay for it.  Unfortunately, this is a
kindergarten parent; what do I do next year? Do I continue to not allow the
child to check out books?

I wish I had an answer for you.
