LM_NET Archive

As I have mentioned several times in my recent posts, I will be retiring as
a public school library media specialist at the end of the month. I will
not be retiring from LM_NET. With over 25 years of experience, I want to be
there to help all of you who are new in the field or who have helped me
solve problems over the past 9 years. I also plan to remain a member of the
Hospitality Committee so that I can help you with problems that you may
encounter.

I have seen a lot of changes in librarianship since I started my career and
feel that we need all of the help that we can get from each other to
encourage children to read and access information. Funding seems to be more
and more of a problem each year. The digital age has brought less emphasis
on using print materials (although children are tested on using print
materials, not electronic resources) and more on electronic resources, but
is this always the best step to take when trying to find information?
LM_NET has been a lifesaver to me in many instances -- whether to get help
with a book, venting my frustrations, or asking for technical advice.
Administrators don't understand the library and many librarians are
evaluated on teacher opinion or "through-the-door" observations and I could
always get support when I felt that I was treated differently because I am a
librarian and not a regular classroom teacher.

By the way, last week one of my 5th graders came up to me and proudly showed
me the information she had written down on Mexico - coming from
encyclopedias and reference books.
