Years ago I changed the wording to reflect that any monies I charged for
late, lost or severely damaged books were "fees".  Unfortunately, you can't
always change the wording on reports that are printed out.

A few years ago I surveyed schools to see whether
charging fines resulted in a higher return rate for
books. Nada.
I've also wondered why only libraries and the police
charge "fines". Maybe we should reposition ourselves
like video stores and call them "extended use fees"!
