One thing I do at the elementary level to get books back is award prizes
at the end of the year for those who have all the books returned. I call
it Mrs. B's garage sale. Its all junk I want to get rid of. Last year I
really weeded the library and one of the choices was discarded books.
The kids loved getting one and several remarked that they read it and it
really was good. Our district allows us to use these discarded books
"educationally" after discarding, and I consider encouraging summer
reading educational. I had less than 10 books at the end to send to
surplus.=20

I've also called in the morning for my worst offenders and asked them to
put in their backpack. It really does work, 'cause as the previously
email stated all the family is listening to the conversation.=20

I have an elementary school and one great way I get the books back is to
call about 6:30 at night. I identify myself and ask for the child. It's
fun
to hear the whole house quiet down so they can listen to why I am
calling. I
ask the child to get the book and put it in the backpack RIGHT NOW. It
works
wonders.
