Last week when I took my Windows XP computer to Gateway because I kept getting a Windows System Error - Multiple IP addresses, the technician told me that my ZoneAlarm Pro firewall was possibly the cause of the problem. I asked him to remove the firewall, which he did. I had been having some problems especially after my last Windows update, but never thought about the firewall, although there were some instances in which I had to turn it off to access some web sites. The technician told me that he does not use a firewall, even with a cable modem. I had used the free version of ZoneAlarm before having virus problems last winter and needing a way to stop email virus extensions and had never had a problem. However, the technician said that unless I keeping my banking or other personal information on my hard drive (which I don't), a firewall isn't really needed and can cause problems. After today, however, I'm beginning to wonder if the multiple IP address problem is with Charter, not the computer. I booted up my old Windows 98 computer after school and got a message that there was a network problem. However, it didn't keep occurring like the one on my Windows XP computer did the other day. If you have an opinion on this, please let me know. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Madeline L. Buchanan, Library Media Specialist W. J.
