This year my school has a new principal and he would like me to give a summer reading assignment (written) to our present grade 2 students. The 2nd graders are our oldest returning students. Normally, I do a parent letter and strongly suggest students join the public library summer reading program. I also give the students summer reading lists of suggested titles. I am a little reluctant to give an assignment because I want my students to enjoy reading and not always tie it to school work. Does anyone use a summer assignment at this level? I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks for your help.
