Our team is in the beginning stages of state conference program planning for 2004. I have looked at many of the trends of topics at ALA, AASL, and several of your state conferences. In order to create more balance, I want to be sure we have the book and technology topics to appeal to middle and high school library media specialists, also, since my bias is towards elementary. I have looked in the archives to see topics discussed in the past, but now would like to encourage you to email me off list with creative off the cuff ideas. For example, when I spoke in Chattanooga, one of the SLMS asked for a workshop on how to motivate or develop the passion for our field when you are a displaced classroom teacher, thrust into the SLMC. That took me a second to think about! Or how about a workshop on Minding our P's and Q's? Some examples running through my head: passion, perfection, practice, patience, persistence, problem-solving quality, quantity, quirkyness Years ago I attend a 2-3 day workshop at University of Iowa on Becoming a Change Agent. I can't remember who was the speaker, but it was an excellent workshop. I learned more from that workshop and my class at UI which focused upon conceptual blockbusting. I use techniques from both daily, and teachers ask how I became so good at thinking outside the box. Go figure! You never know which topic will have the biggest impact. Diane R.
