Vicki,

I feel for you. It isn't fair but as Dan pointed out, the district is
within it's rights. Replacing experienced employees with newbies is nothing new.
I'm sure many of us know experienced men in their 50s who find themselves with a
"golden parachute" and a handshake as they are replaced by younger, cheaper
workers.

Consider yourself lucky that this situation is being exposed more than a
year before it may actually happen. Dan suggested that you need to build your
case for being retained. Parent groups like volunteers and PTOs can be very
effective in getting an employees contract renewed. Let them know of your
plight.

Another suggestion is to start keeping an electronic as well as a paper
portfolio of all your accomplishments. This will be helpful if you do have to
look for another position.

Networking is also essential. This can be done through colleagues in
neighboring districts as well as your state and/or county media
association. Some retirees don't inform the district until the last minute.
Other librarians may know of an open position before the district does. In NJ
both Rutgers SCLIS and the EMAnj have online listings of open positions.
