I say to enjoy being a high school media specialist. Any trace of a fixed
schedule is probably out the window, as it should be. That can be very
good, or it can set you up to be available to all people at all times.
Establish clear guidelines for students' visits to the LMC during study hall
or other unscheduled time. Insist the teacher provide you with a copy of
each assignment before visiting with a class for research. Use sensible
filters on the Internet. Compile a list of overdue materials at least 4
times a year, and try to get some leverage with witholding report cards or
some such method. Don't assume there are no leisure readers. Keep
displaying new books, and make interesting thematic book displays.
Subscribe to the magazines they like, but don't circulate the current copy.
Consider comfy seating areas (in plain view). Let everyday be a new
beginning for you and for everyone you deal with -- don't hang onto
yesterday's problems. Watch the amazing transformation that happens to your
students in four short years. Congratulations, and good luck!
