Target: looking for book

Good Morning,
I'm looking for a YA book about a girl from Wyoming or Montana. They
have no electricity in the house.  She takes bucket showers and gets
schooling via correspondance courses. She lives alone with an older male
that's killed somehow and she ends up riding her horse to the city
(Helena??). I vaguely remember that someone is chasing her and that
someone shoots at her at some point in the story.  She uses a pay phone
and it's the first time that she ever used a phone.
I read this book as a teen in the late 70's.  Does it ring any bells
with anyone??
