MS: "Roots" replacement

Our MS media specialist has been asked to find an "academic version"
(abridged and cleaned up a bit)  of the Alex Haley's "Roots" or an
alternative. The teachers have had a filmstrip/cassette set that is
acceptable, but there now is a cassette missing. I'm quite sure we
can't find a replacement for that, but have you found anything that
might cover the same content as "Roots"?

Any ideas?
