I had several ask for a hit on this query I sent. Thanks for all who
responded. Below is a compilation of the responses I received,
minus personal identification. Thanks for the help!

I use Ebsco for some, and Discount Magazine Subscription Service
for others (to save $$). Their phone# is (516)681-0247. They have
been very reliable, and in many cases have been much cheaper
than Ebsco.

Like you I found EBSCO to be somewhat expensive. I switched some of my
subscriptions to SSA (Subscription Services of America). I was satisfied with
their services and switched almost all of my subscriptions this year. I checked
with the listserv last year and did not find any that were
dissatisfied with SSA. Good luck.

I think you should check out the magazine jobber I have
used for five years. I used to use EBSCO and somebody
else before that. But Alini is the most wonderful service
I've had. The best thing is the personal service - you
always get results when you call and they follow up later
to see if the problem is solved. With EBSCO we used to
have missing issues, late starts, duplicates, etc...and we
would have to fill out claim forms in triplicate to no avail!
These people are the best. The manager's name is Norm.

Try Subscription Services of America or Discount Magazines.

I've used W.T. Cox for several years and have been very pleased with their
service. Great people to work with. Real people answer the phone if you do
have a problem.

I'm sure I'm bucking a trend but I stopped using the service about
a year and a half ago. I had been throwing out the renewal notices from
the publishers but for some reason I opened one and discovered that the
renewal rate was much lower from the individual publishers than I could
get from the jobbers. It is some additional work but we are a small
district and the office doesn't seem to mind cutting the checks. I've
been able to add a few new items and still spend less than I did before.
I come in one day during the summer and write them all up and that's it.

It depends on the amount of work you're willing to do. I've read that some
librarians don't want to deal with individual companies and prefer someone
else to order all of their magazines for them. The librarian at the school
I have now did that.

This year I ordered my magazines from individual publishers and for very
little more than she spent for 1 year subscriptions I was able to get
multiple year subscriptions and almost double the number of magazines that I
was able to order. I spent about 1/7th more than she paid for one year.

I ordered most of them over the Internet, wrote purchase orders out and now
I have no magazines to order next year. The treasurer was so surprised at
the amount of money we saved that she said she would divide the cost over
the time of the subscription if I wanted her to and she hates accruals.

Next year you may want to try putting your periodicals list out for bid to
several companies and see if those results help.

I agree with you that EBSCO does seem to have higher prices for some
things, and when I first started this job, I switched the existing EBSCO
service to Discount Magazine. I quickly found that they are not as
reliable a service. I would get magazines I never ordered, and not get
ones I did. They would make substitutions of whatever they wanted if
they did not have a title that I listed in a fax, but never tell me that
was what they were doing. It was very frustrating, and I have gone back
to EBSCO.
Just one person's experience!

We use Magazine Subscription Service. When I find prices on
subscriptions that are better than theirs, I send them a copy of the
offer and they give me the lower price. Very good service, too. Call
Criss at 1-800-367-7015.

I use WTCOX and they have been very helpful and diligent. I do not know
how their prices compare to other vendors, but I have been pleased.

We use Discount Magazine Subscriptions Service and have been very pleased.
Their address is discountmagazine@yahoo.com and the telephone number is
(516) 681-0247.

I order directly from the publishers. I've found that I get better prices
that way, and the business office here doesn't mind the additional work
involved. I generally order for the longest time period offered, since that
usually has the best deal. Sometimes, though, the price is the same, and
then I'll take just one year at a time.

In the Highline school district we use W.T. Cox -- great service. Because
it's a district bid, I'm pretty sure their rates are at least cometitive
(this district always goes to the cheap end!). Had Ebsco for 2 years (they
were low bid that cycle) and didn't care for their service!

We use Popular Subscription Service, and I haven't had any problems.
